Audiovisuals

New The 'Promotion and access to the market' programme aims to improve access conditions for professionals who trade events with professional audiovisual markets. Proposals are due by 7 August 2009.

Environment

New The LIFE+ programme provides €20 million for co-financing UK nature and biodiversity, environment policy and governance and information and communication projects. Proposals are due by 15 September 2009.

Energy

The Eco-Innovation Programme supports the first application and further market uptake of eco-innovative products and services in Europe. Proposals are due by 10 September 2009.

Research and development

The ARTEMIS programme focuses on downstream research and technology development with a strong market drive. Proposals are due by 3 September 2009.

The ENIAC Joint Undertaking Initiative for research and development of nanoelectronics is due by 3 September 2009.

The ICT FET Open Scheme operates a continuous proposal submission process for small and medium-scale project proposals undertaking long-term research into information and communication technologies until 24 May 2011.

Safety of Toys Directive, EC legislation This Directive updates and clarifies legislation on the safety of toys. It broadens the safety requirements relating to the characteristics and use of toys. It also reinforces market surveillance obligations and the obligations of manufacturers and distributors. It establishes a new framework for the marketing of toys to ensure compliance with the Community rules on the marketing of products.

Classification and reporting of consumer complaints, EC consultation This consultation aims at gathering opinion from the general public on the proposed harmonised methodology for the classifying and reporting of consumer complaints and enquiries.

Modernising European ICT standardisation policy, EC consultation This consultation aims at gathering opinion from the general public on the proposed revision and update of teh ICT standardisation policy at the European level. It will allow the Commission to gain an understanding of public views on the need to modernise European ICT standardisation policy.

Financial services:

UCITS Depositary function, EC consultation This consultation aims to provide the European Commission with a wide-range of views on its intention to revise legislation on UCITS depositaries. Based on the results of this consultation the Commission will assess the appropriateness of existing approaches to the regulation and supervision of this sector.

Financial services:

Enhancing the resilience of OTC derivatives markets, EC consultation This consultation seeks opinions of Member States' authorities, credit institutions, investment firms, fund managers, insurance companies, non-financial firms and investors on ways to enhance the resilience of OTC derivatives markets.

Immigration:

Sanctions against employers of illegal immigrants, EC legislation This Directive is a cornerstone of the emerging common European immigration policy. It prohibits the employment of illegally staying third-country nationals in order to fight illegal immigration. The Directive also defines minimum common standards on sanctions and measures to be applied in the Member States against employers who infringe that prohibition.

Internet:

Amendment of rules concerning the domain .eu, EC legislation This amendment to Regulation No. 874/2004/EC updates public policy rules concerning implementation and functions of the domain ‘.eu’ and amends the principles relating to registrations on this domain.

Roaming:

Roaming Directive, EC legislation This Directive amends two existing Directives on roaming on public mobile telephone networks within the EC and on a common regulatory framework for electronic communications networks and services. It introduces a common approach to ensuring that users of public mobile communications networks do not pay excessive prices for Community-wide roaming services in comparison with competitive national prices. The maximum average wholesale charge is set to decrease to EUR 0.28 and EUR 0.26 on 30 August 2008 and on 1 July 2009 respectively and shall further decrease to EUR 0.22 and EUR 0.18 on 1 July 2010 and on 1 July 2011 respectively. This will contribute to the smooth functioning of the internal market while achieving a high level of consumer protection, and fostering competition and transparency in the market.

Single market:

Measures to improve the single market functioning, EC legislation The Commission has adopted a set of ten non-binding recommendations to member states in order to improve the functioning of the single European market.
