EU legislation and consultations

Food:

Foodstuffs Intended for Particular Nutritional Uses, EC legislation Directive 2009/39/EC recasts and amends the previous legislation on foodstuffs intended for nutritional use dating from 1989. Differences between national laws relating to foodstuffs for particular nutritional uses impede their free movement, may create unequal conditions of competition, and thus have a direct impact on the functioning of the internal market. The products covered by this Directive are foodstuffs the composition and preparation of which must be specially designed to meet the particular nutritional requirements of those for whom they are mainly intended. It may therefore be necessary to provide for derogations from the provisions applicable to foodstuffs in order to achieve the specific nutritional objective.

Telecoms:

Application of State Aid Rules to Public Funding of Broadband Networks, EC consultation The objective of the consultation is to gather information from stakeholders on the Broadband Guidelines, which lay down how the Commission will apply the EU state aid rules in relation to public support granted for broadband network infrastructure deployment. Governments, public authorities, telecoms operators and investors in broadband networks are all invited to comment in particular on the Commission's proposed approach towards state aid for Next Generation Access network deployment. The consultation is open until 22 June.

Transport:

Promotion of Clean and Energy-Efficient Road Transport Vehicles, EC legislation This Directive aims to stimulate the market for clean and energy-efficient road transport vehicles, and to influence the market for standardised vehicles produced in larger quantities such as passenger cars, buses, coaches and trucks, by ensuring a level of demand for clean and energy-efficient road transport vehicles which is sufficiently substantial to encourage manufacturers and the industry to invest in and further develop vehicles with low energy consumption, CO 2 emissions, and pollutant emissions.

Transport:

Proposed Tyre Labelling Directive, Department of Transport consultation The consultations seeks views on the proposed Directive that would require tyres to carry labels, at the point of sale, indicating their performance level in terms of rolling resistance, wet grip, and noise. The Directive would require this performance information to be made available in technical manuals, brochures, catalogues and internet marketing. Its main objective is to promote improved vehicle fuel efficiency through a market transformation towards tyres with lower rolling-resistance. The proposed Directive complements the recently agreed type-approval legislation on tyres setting minimum requirements for rolling resistance, wet grip and external rolling noise. The proposal covers tyres for cars, for light and medium commercial vehicles and for heavy commercial vehicles, coaches and buses.
