EU Legislation and consultations

Agriculture

Directive 2008/84 laying down purity criteria for food additives, EC legislation The new Directive establishes purity criteria for food additives other than colours and sweeteners. Purity criteria for a large number of additives are defined in the annex to the Directive.

Aviation:

Amended technical requirements and administrative procedures for air transports, EC legislation Regulation 859/2008 amends the harmonised rules on technical requirements and procedures for commercial air transports (3922/91/EC). The harmonised rules are updated when scientific and technical progress requires it. These amendments take into account the latest work conducted by the European Air Safety Agency.

Competition:

Commission consultation on draft legislation for state aid reform, EC consultation The consultation seeks views on a set of guidelines intended to provide national courts and potential claimants with more detailed guidance in the field of state aid. The guidelines elaborate on the EU Courts’ jurisprudence on the role of national courts and covers subjects such as the protection of individual rights and the recovery of illegal aid.

Consumers:

Directive 2008/88/EC amending rules on cosmetic products, EC legislation The Directive concerns the use of hair dye substances and follows recommendations from the Scientific Committee on Cosmetic Products and Non-Food Products intended for Consumers. The recommendations are based on findings from a scientific study that shows potential cancer risks to be associated with the use of permanent hair dyes.

ICT:

Consultation on ensuring Europe remains at the forefront of Internet technology for a new generation, EC consultation The Commission has launched a consultation to prepare for a Communication on the ‘The Internet of Things’, i.e. the wireless interaction between machines, appliances, sensors and many other devices that, in the future, will take place using the Internet. The consultation invites comments from universities and research centres, public authorities and private organisations. It focuses especially on areas such as emerging applications, security, regulations and standards.

Justice:

Future priorities for justice, freedom and security, EC consultation To define future priorities for justice, freedom and security within the EU, the Commission has launched a wide-ranging public consultation. The views and concerns of citizens, organisations and public authorities are sought for the consultation questionnaire.

Transport:

Daytime running lights for motor vehicles, EC legislation To increase road safety, the Commission will introduce the obligation of fitting daytime running lights on all new motor vehicles from 2011. The lamps have low energy consumption, and automatically switch on when the engine is started. They increase substantially the visibility of other road users, and have proved to be effective in countries where the obligation already exists.

Transport:

Uniform rules for all inland transport of dangerous goods, EC legislation Directive 2008/68/EC creates a common framework covering all inland transport of dangerous goods, thereby replacing the previous regulatory system whereby road and rail transport of dangerous goods were treated separately. The Directive also covers inland waterways.
